Observations of Ferguson

11/25/2014

Watching the Ferguson prosecutor on live tv, it struck me that I was watching a wave roll through the masses assembled in the streets. The prosecutor appeared to be deep in the midst of of a major CYA, and at times, I perceived a slight smirk on his face. I thought to myself that it may infuriate many of the protestors.

Ironically, when POTUS came on, I noticed a similar smirk. It appeared that POTUS was throwing our LEO's under the bus to a degree by appearing sympathic about the distrust of LEO's among minorities. Really?

The instigators meanwhile moved into their pre-determined positions to begin the vandalism, random shots in the air, and arson as POTUS began to wrap his little plea for peace. Those people weren't there for the truth, they were there for a form of vigilant justice.
If YOU want to know the truth, here is a link to the grand jury transcripts:

May God see fit to end this quickly...

Get Training!

Owning and/or carrying a firearm for personal protection requires knowledge of its proper use, legalities of self-defense, an understanding of your gear, and the proper mindset and confidence.

Please educate yourself regarding the laws of your home state and any other state you intend to bring your firearm. Ignorance is not an excuse for breaking a law.

Pursue training with a competent trainer that suits your style. A good instructor will give you "homework" - dry fire items you can practice a home. Your draw, grip, stance, and trigger control are the foundation items that need constant practice! Our laser training classes are perfect for the much needed muscle memory.

Know your gear, know your laws, and train often and properly! Owning a gun is not just a Constitutional right, it a tremendous responsibility.

Women and Firearms at Cajun Arms

PictureJim Benoit teaching a student defensive pistol
At Cajun Arms, we cater to all shooters from every walk of life, age, and gender!
As a matter of fact, we pride ourselves in offering the best and most patient service in the Delaware Valley- especially for new shooters and women.
We de-mystify guns and learning how to use them. The majority of our classes are comprised of men and women. We occasionally run a women's only class or teach a private class of all women, but the majority of classes are co-ed. Many ladies have confided in us that they prefer the mix and like the camaraderie that builds with the other students as the class progresses.
At the retail level, we meet with every new shooter and make sure they go home with a gun that fits them and that they will be able to handle. We do not presume that every woman needs a 38 special snubbie. If you are ever in a gun store that does that, RUN out and come to Cajun Arms. Everyone has different needs, strength and weaknesses: men and women! There is no one gun fits all. We also offer rental guns and  equipment for our firearms classes. This is a great way to try a few guns to figure out what will work!
Give us a call or send us an email to discuss your needs.

Open Your Eyes! (field of view)

Many of our students come in the level one classes squinting with one eye shut. One of the first things we work on is getting these folks to open both of their eyes.  Running your gun with both eyes open affords you additional situational awareness and peripheral vision that is necessary in a fight. You wouldn't get in a fist fight and shut one of your eyes - right? Then don't do it with a defensive firearm!

Threats trying to flank us is a reality in a gunfight. We train for reality, therefore it is imperative to have full peripheral vision.

The Instructors from T3 and Cajun Arms try to bring in parallels to everyday life into class.

Remember, this is how you should live your life:
Keep both eyes open
Be situationally aware
Never offer the bad guy a blind side!

Election Day impacts...

11/6/2014

To everyone that voted Tuesday, thank you. You truly made a difference.

As an elected local official, I am a registered Republican. I would prefer to be an Independent. However, to me, elections aren't about Republican or Democrat. I vote for the individual: and one of my priorities is to ensure the candidate is gun friendly. So forget about who "controls" Congress. The bigger issue is that the Republicans can direct Congressional approval of Federal judges, especially Supreme Court justices for the next two years. We no longer need to spend sleepless nights with nightmares of Eric Holder sitting on the Supreme Court.

This Election Day also took a few notches out of Hillary Clinton as more than 30 of her endorsed Democrats she and Willy campaigned for were defeated. Maybe now, someone can start asking her for some answers and accountability. Time will tell.

The point of this ramble is that it was a good day for lawful gun owners. The Republican sweep is a good thing for us. The tide of legal right to carry and gun ownership can continue for the next two years. We still need to be vigilant, but the next two years should be a bit easier.

Know your gun laws before crossing state lines...

Obtaining your concealed carry permit is a straightforward process in my home state of Pennsylvania. Carrying within the state is also straightforward. As we instruct our students, it gets troublesome when you cross a state border with your gun. Do NOT go to New Jersey, New York, Delaware, or Maryland without a full understanding what is and isn't permitted.
Case-in-point http://articles.philly.com/2014-08-07/news/52519315_1_gun-laws-gun-violence-heeding-god
This hard-working, law-abiding mother of two made a big mistake entering the People's Republic of New Jersey with a pistol loaded with hollow points. She was honest and forthcoming with the NJ trooper about her gun and her carry permit when pulled over.

She faced a 3 1/2 year prison term and her children becoming wards of the state. She incorrectly assumed that a state that recognizes her drivers license would also recognize her carry permit. New Jersey does not recognize ANY other state's permit!

Somewhere within the process in PA, information should be given to ensure every new concealed carry recipient understands state reciprocity or lack thereof!

At Cajun Arms, we take the time with our customers to discuss all of the important issues of gun ownership with our clients! It is not just about the sale - it's about a full understanding of the implications and education regarding the immense responsibility of lawfully owning a firearm!

Give yourself every opportunity to hit your target

PictureJim Benoit during firearms instruction
I have noticed students in class not perform to shooting levels at which they are capable. Why is that?
I believe their mind is not in the right place. These students worry more about what will happen when they miss instead of focusing on the task at hand.
I tell my students that their imagination and visualization must come into play during firearms training. Imagine that your paper target is a bad guy trying to hurt a love one. Now, get your head on straight and see yourself stopping the bad guy quickly and efficiently and do it! I know it sound easy, but the student must see themselves wining the fight every time. If you see yourself being killed or injured, it may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Train hard and train often. If you never miss your target you are not pushing hard enough.
